Diane Lee out at WYOU, Kuharchik promoted

Several tipsters tell Beale's Bites that WYOU anchorwoman Diane Lee isn't sticking around to anchor on the Starship Enterprise. She has resigned from WYOU, and is heading to Fox affiliate WXXA in Albany, N.Y., for a morning anchor job.

Tipsters say someone else at the Nexstar duopoly is expected to hand in their walking papers as well.

Also, WYOU weekend weather forecaster David Kuharchik has signed a five-year contract to work on WBRE/WYOU's simulcast Pennsylvania Morning and Midday. He'll formally replace longtime forecaster Vince Sweeney, who was fired last month for still-unknown reasons.

Looks like the staffing situation at WYOU is getting worse...

Good for her!

Dave, a five year deal? Hope that gives you the security that so many seem to feel is missing around there these days.

Good luck to both, though I think he'll need it more, now.

How's that workin' out for you, Johnnie?

It is a shame Diane Lee is leaving. She is polished, professional and for the short time she was here very involved in the community. I thought she was going to be the next Debbie Dunleavy, o perhaps she was underappreciated....

Diane is pretty good, but what WYOU needs most of all right now is consistency. New format, new faces, new set, etc. It's too much at once.

Dave is very, very good, but will he bring viewers to that morning show? Dunno.

Diane Lee as the next Deb Dunleavy is the most sickening thought I've ever read.

She was a whiner and a primma donna. WYOU could certainly do better.

I was chatting up a friend at one of the stations and heard 22 has hired a meteo from Lancaster. I have the impression (note: “impression,” but not absolutely sure) that he will be doing weather weekends and similar-type stuff during the week, maybe street as needed.

Good for her, Bad for WYOU - the station flat-out stinks! - They drove her out, bastards!

Must be all those sour-grapes/crass/rude remarks from a certain on-air personality that pushed all that forward.

It is a sorry day for WYOU.

Hey "primma donna" - learn how to spell won't you! - It's "prima donna" you idiot! AND you wouldn't know a prima donna from a hole in the wall...learn how to spell for crying out loud! - You are just the kind of person who criticized Diane Lee's so-called problems? - Take a long look in the mirror, pal! - He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone!

Talk about a myopic view. Take a look at what's going on in that building, look at the pathetic ratings on both sides, look at how they bleed employees, look at how they trashed two long-time employees recently, with rumors flying that at least one more is due. I said this elsewhere on this blog, but here goes again; if they posted a sign-up sheet for volunteers willing to be fired, the line would stretch over up to the third floor of Boscovs. Diane Lee just made the smartest move of her life. Good luck, Diane...

I remember when Dave was going to leave after "management" strung him along on a full time position. Dave dropped alot of weight and sent out tapes and was going to leave them high and dry. It was only then that they gave him a full time job due to the fact that they couldn't get anyone else cheap.

Amen to 6:47 PM. The people calling Nextstar "Deathstar" are right on the money

Diane Lee is a GEM. Have you seen the "promos" for the "new" 6 PM newscasts. They clearly indicate WYOU is like the Titanic.

Diane Lee is better off without WYOU. I agree with another blogger - GO BLACK ! FOR GOD'S SAKE, GO BLACK!!! PLEASE!!!!!

I have some words for Eric Deabill - Eric, follow Diane if at all possible. Run away from WYOU as fast as you can.

I fear for Laurie Monteforte. She is such a nice, sweet person. The poor girl may be holding the bag on this one.

She has great talent, but if she is thrust into any anchor position and left to flounder, they'll crucify her in this forum.

Diane Lee is the one they should have as a consultant. At least she has some ability to mentor young talent.

Don't get me wrong, it is not that Laurie doesn't have talent but that this market will not wait for her to gain experience before ripping her to shreds the way they did Diane Lee.

At least Diane has a thick skin and decided enough was enough.

Let's see. It's Wednesday. Keeping to schedule, that means today or tomorrow is the day they screw over Sid Michaels.

Musical chairs? I figure when Nexstar built the new "starship" set they didn't leave enough money for four seats. Scott ("I have a chemical imbalance that makes me an asshole") Stuccio can always stand at the weather map.

8:01 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Prediction... Sid goes back to 28, since Schoener probably will leave when his contract is up in October... then 50 will have a combined high school football highlight show on Fridays, "Pennsylvania Touchdown"... with all of the weather guys in the field contributing, "A beautiful 75 degree evening in Mount Carmel... and the Red Tornadoes returned the kickoff 75 yards for a score. The final, Mt Carmel 35, Biglerville 0, Temperature 65."

Let's consider this scenario: A hurricane is moving up the coast and severe weather warnings are in effect. WBRE's team of 20 something meteorologists are on the story. Some kid says, "People in THAroop should take cover." Or, "In fifteen minutes the storm will be over Ton-ca-hannock." Just the people I plan to rely on. How fast can I reach for the remote???

Whoever posted that Diane should be a consultant clearly has never spent time with her behind-camera. Don't be blinded by the pretty eyes and blonde hair. Off-camera she's got very little between the ears, not to mention an enormous ego. I know of a lot of WYOU and WBRE staffers who are turning handsprings now that she's gone.

And the only reason she's leaving is because Nexstar balked at her contract demands. Albany was her second choice (a whopping 55 market).

10:12 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:12

Handsprings? Yeah, and you're left behind (as always) holding what end of what stick? You've been standing in it so long you're starting to believe the Nexstar line that it smells like roses.

Q: When is Diane Lee's last day?

12:30 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Isn't WBRE starting something new with the weather? Let me guess: a few 20-something meteorologist school graduates doing the weather. Newbie #1 says: A thunderstorm warning is in effect for THA-roop, people should take cover. That storm will be approaching Ton-Cah-Hann-ock in 20-minutes. Yep, makes me feel safe knowing a "meteorologist" is keeping an eye on things. How fast can I reach for the remote control?

10:38, you're right, Diane was not well-liked.

She was a little too smart, and we don't much like smart (Who do you think YOU are?).

She at least started with a positive work attitude, more proof she didn't fit in (Who DO you think you are?).

She was a hard worker (Now you're showing us up).

She had energy (now we KNOW you don't belong here).

She was good looking (an obvious giveaway).

Yeah, 22 will do much better with Fill-in-the-Blank-Here as anchor. I'm sure Diane will miss all her good friends at WYOU. In the future, if she wants to look any of you up she knows right where you'll be: in the same place, at the same jobs, whining the same tune and blaming everyone else for your lot in life.

You sure showed her!

5:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am sick and tired of people trying to paint Diane as some kind of monster or airhead. I worked with the woman for a year, and she is one of the nicest people that I have ever met in my life!

She also teaches at Wilkes - how does this make her an airhead?

I'll bet that the people typing comments about her not being well-liked are the egotistical directors and producers down there who think that they're better than everyone else. (I could easily name people here, but they don't deserve the publicity.)

Diane is better off leaving WYOU behind. After all of the bullshit that I dealt with at that place, I can only hope that others follow suit.

How old is Diane Lee?

6:54 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Another negative about Diane Lee: she wasn't from around here. She didn't know how to pronounce the names of the towns.

Look at Peter Jennings. He didn't know how to pronounce "Troop," and now he's dead.

Serves him right for not being from around here. No wonder we didn't like him.

8:28 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Diane's whole problem was she came into Nexstar with a chip on her shoulder from Day one. It was her way or the highway and that did nothing for her employee relations. Looking pretty on the air isn't everything.

And BTW, Albany is a step backwards.

9:04 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can vouch for the fact that Diane was difficult to work with. She didn't have a lot of friends left around WYOU.

10:35 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jerry Bruno? Wow, that's a name I haven't said out loud in years. That fool is still poisoning that market? When he was at WBRE, instead of doing his job, he was too busy trying to get new employees fired so he could get promoted to a "full time" position.

WBRE hasn't been Nexstar's "flagship" station for about four years now. Their current "flagship" station is KARK in Little Rock, Arkansas. I believe Nexstar acquired KARK, when Sook the Schnook bought all the Quorum stations back in 2003. I understand KARK actaully draws a profit too.

Albany is a step backwards?

I'm sorry, I can't think of a single job--in broadcasting or out--worse than working for WYOU.

And c'mon, let's give credit where credit is due: Alan Brocavich led the charge against Diane Lee. He's convinced that if only people would do things his way WYOU could regain its lost glory.

And maybe hit a 4 share.

7:26 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm on Ineeda's side in a way. Brocavich is just like Bruno. If you're not one of his favorites, he will do what he can to get you fired. Brocavich is another one who was going around trying to get new employees fired (while they were still on the three month union probationary period) so a certain part-timer could get "promoted." They are both slime balls.

Perhaps Brocavich and Bruno should become the station's news director and assistant news director. Let's see those ratings shoot up like a rocket!

10:11 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

WBRE hasn't been Nexstar's "flagship" station for about four years now. Their current "flagship" station is KARK in Little Rock, Arkansas...

WBRE was supposed to be the goose that laid the golden egg, it was supposed to generate profits that would fuel the rapid expansion Nexstar wanted nationwide. It's another one of those, "Hey, how's that workin' out?" deals.
They destroyed WBRE/WYOU by allowing Herbster and Zobel to cut services at least in half, thereby destroying their ability to turn huge profits. Am I the only one who can see Nexstar filing any day now?

Gone a bit off track here again, haven't we Howard ?

Even IF someone "led a charge" against Ms. Lee, who cares ? It's a moot point. She wasn't forced out, she left on her own and on apparant good terms. There is no demise to speak of, or blame anyone for.

And Albany's DMA is 55. Scranton/WB is 54. Not a huge step backwards, but a step back nonetheless. I'm actually surprised Ms. Lee didn't land a job in the high 30's somewhere.

I agree with John, it takes no guts at all to write some of the things about people on this site without signing your name.
Bottom line is this a people business people like Vince who was kicked in the groin but keeped on going, people like Jason Knapp who cared about local sports, knew local sports like no one since Jim Miller or Sid. Tough business, yes, but being a News Director is akin to being a baseball manager, hired to know you will only be fired at some point in time.

I have worked with Alan at 22 and I found him to be a committed person, committed to producing the best possible product, not afraid to share his thoughts. I don't understand why he gets attack on this forum all the time. If you work with him and have a problem with him , then have the balls to tell it to him, face to face. I always said I would rather have an employee call me a sob to my face than play Mr. or Mrs. Happy in front of me, only to complain behind my back.

Everyone working in this industry has a single goal, self improvement! It is the nature of the business...

- Did anyone know that Diane has battled learning disabilities all her life? She still has trouble reading and spelling. She's had to literally fight for all she has achieved in this business. I know because I know her personally. I know what she goes through on a daily basis. She fights through her problems like a trooper. That has made her tougher and maybe that shows when she deals with people. But, all-in-all, she sets extremely high standards for herself and those around her. She hasn't won 2 AP awards for nothing: What awards have you won?
Let me guess: Nothing?

How does it feel to bash someone who has had trouble reading and spelling from when she was a child?

Are you happy? Does that make you feel big and strong?

You are pitiful and my God have mercy on you!

All I can say is that having troubles like she has makes you tougher. It may show as indifference to others because she feels she has to put on the touch exterior in order to make it in this business. She fights her way through those disabilites EVERY DAY. What disabilites do you fight through?

Before you bash someone with learning disabilites you unkind people better take another look at yourselves!

Dave has the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal. This seal started in Jan 05 and sets a higher standard. You need a BS in meteorology or a related field and have to take a written exam. The regular AMS seal folks do not need to have a meteorology degree, but many do. It is basically the gold standard. After Jan 08, the regular AMS seal will not be awarded, and only the AMS CBM seal will exist. Dave also has a seal from the National Weather Association. Vince Sweeny’s name is not on any organizations sites. Maybe 50 wants to capitalize on weather and have the most “credible meteorologists” as possible. That might be why Vince was let go.

Alan started at WYOU during the Bill Christian days when the station was at its high point. He worked with some of the best directors in this market, one of which was Jack Kearney. Try to bash the quality of WYOU`s Game of the Week, or High School basketball, or Red Barons baseball, Touchdown 22, Old Fashioned 4ths. He worked most of those live broadcasts. Can you blame him for wanting to make good TV while station personel at other stations are fighting change left and right. I worked with Alan for many years, and I worked with Mark Thomas at WYOU. I agree with everything Mark has to say about Alan.
I can`t even remeber this much bashing of co-workers when WYOU was in Scranton. The was some unhappiness, but just about everyone wanted to do the best job that they could. What happened to that? Can it all be Nexstar`s fault? Can`t anybody do their best despite the adversity?
Just give the guy some slack. Relax and have fun! Isn`t that why people get into TV to begin with?

It doesn't matter if I've worked 7 seconds or 70 years in broadcasting, local or otherwise. I'm a viewer, and what I've seen around here is just terrible. If you want to put up with mumbling, stumbling anchors then you've got just what you wanted here.

The professionalism of local media? It's evidenced by Webster's response to my original post with his profanity. "F------" is what it is, letters left out or not. I hope he's proud of himself, but more importantly I hope his kid(s) is/are just as proud. Perhaps they can join him some day getting wasted at a happy hour, or downing some ale...

As for me, well let's just say that I am (legitimately) in the top 1% of wage earners in this area. It's one of the things that since the day I arrived. I never wanted anyone to know it, because I see the disdain given to anyone who makes more than $30,000 a year around here. Instead of being congratulated for our efforts, we're villified. 20 years here and I never once saw a "Valley with a Heart" towards me. And trust me, I dumped a lot of my own heart and soul into things trying to "fit in".

So I can understand why every good, talented media person leaves here. They're never made to feel welcome, just like the rest of us "outsiders". How long do you have to live in Luzerne county before they stop calling you an outsider?

This area gets exactly what it deserves, and probably what it wants. Second...no wait...third class services. It will never change.

If you're in the top 1% of wage earners in this area it sure isn't because you can compose a unified, coherent paragraph. Spelling doesn't seem to be your strong suit either.

Boohoo, you've given the valley your heart and didn't get it back.

Re-read your original post. (3:28)

"But hey, what the heck do I care. I'll be out of this dump of an area in a couple of months..."

Yeah, you sound like a real giver who's trying and trying to fit in. Those were some real nice things you had to say about some of the TV folk too. You definitely seem like a high-paid, class operator.

I know you're also not being paid that big money based on how gullible you are NOT, since you seem to believe everything you hear me say on the radio. (Thanks for listening!) Contrary to the picture you paint, I'm not in a bar every day of the week.

But in the end, since you'll be leaving this "dump of an area" soon, it really doesn't matter what you think or what you write here about me.

I will say that if you want to mention my kids here ever again, pray to God above that you have something nice to say about them or be certain you don't screw up and accidentally sign your name to your comment.

Oh please John. I missed a comment in a paragraph and that's what you focus on? Please, save your grammatical prowess for some of the others here.

What I said about the anchors is fact. I'm not the only one who thinks so.

And yes, I gave a lot to this valley and got squat in return. You can't tell me that the locals embrace anyone who comes in who's doing better than they are, can you? Can you honestly say that?

As for listening to you, nah. Haven't done so since, oh, forever. I was "fortunate" enough to see you on the BRE morning show, which by the way has (in my opinion) the most professional of the achnor folks on it (now that Vince is gone).

So tell me John, how professional are you acting now towards me? Apparently you're not capable of a rational discussion as witnessed by your profanity and your focusing on grammatical errors.

Show me where I said anything bad about your kids John. If you read it properly you'd see that I was criticizing you, not them. Yet your response is a veiled threat. Once again, a real professional response.

Yes, I am happy to be leaving a place where there is no future for my children, and no end in sight to the increase in drug use and continued excessive drinking. I am happy to be leaving an area where thieves are referred to as "robbers" or "bad guys" by TV news, and the Police Officers are "cops". Where are we, in a Dick Tracy comic strip?

I truly hope the grammar and punctuation I used this time is up to your high standards John.

Have a nice day.

I' like to see you pansy-asses try to talk your smack IN PERSON to Alan or Webster. It's pretty easy to talk crap over the internet, isn't it ?

Don't bash Alan and Webster just because they succeed in a business that the rest of you lameasses washed out of. Jealous much ?

No I'm not Alan or Webster.

I'd have to be an idiot to argue with an idiot.

Just so one thing's clear, I didn't think there was much of a veil to that threat.

I would just like to say that, as a non-media "layperson" of average intelligence, this thread is more entertaining than any of the crap I watch on any of our local channels. I would love to see a 2 out of 3 falls "cage match" between the "Tanned Twosome" of WNEP and the "Di-namic duo" of Lee and Sweeney---if Vince would be willing to don the tights, and if I could sell tickets. No, wait---Sister Adrian could sell tickets and it could be sponsored by Munley, Munley, and Cartwright!!
