New job for ousted WBRE weatherman

Nearly one month after being fired, former WBRE weather forecaster Vince Sweeney has found a new job outside broadcasting. A press release says he's the new executive director of the Luzerne County SPCA, effective September 18.

There's still no word on where his fellow fired counterpart, Jason Knapp, has ended up. A Google search turns up a same-named fellow doing wrestling play-by-play for College Sports TV, where former WBRE sports anchorman Adam Zucker is now working.

Jason has done some college hoops PxP so I'd imagine that's him

Good for Vince! He should have a well developed skill set for working with animals after dealing with the WBRE management for all those years.

I can totally see how a weatherman would be qualified for executive director of the Luzerne County SPCA.

Vince and his wife have spent years doing volunteer work and fundraising for the SPCA.

My guess is his job will involve being the public face of the SPCA, to help coordinate volunteer efforts and keep the SPCA top-of-mind for the public. Who better than Vince Sweeney? Well-liked, well-regarded, a good guy.

you could say Vince wasn't a weatherman (a.k.a. layman's term for meteorologist, i know, i know big difference, stay with me) you could say the only thing the man knows how to "exectuively direct" is food into his mouth, but I am not for tearing a man down. I wish him well.

Please allow me the opportunity to thank everyone who has been so supportive during this "interesting" period of my life. Support from the public has been overwhelming, and a good many insiders here on this blog have likewise been terrific.

The SPCA will get my very best, as did my viewers/listeners during my long career in broadcasting. It was a great run, I wouldn't change any of it. Thanks.

Vince Sweeney

So that's sarcasm then and you can't see how he'd be qualified? A well-known, well-liked person who's been in the communications business probably 30 or more years, 20 on TV, congenial, friendly, intelligent. Worked with the SPCA for years as a volunteer? You can't see how he'd be qualified, is that what you're saying? You're a dolt then? Or did I read you wrong?

Well, as others have already noted, Sweeney and his wife have been involved with the SPCA for quite some time, and I'll bet dollars to donuts he learned a few things along the way.

That said, I think the SPCA wants more of a "public face" than an "executive director," to attract more attention and donations to the agency. Given that Sweeney is such a recognizable face around these parts, I think the SPCA made a good pick.

Vince, as one of your listeners on 107, you left a gaping hole when you left and are sadly missed. Those 7:50 segments were classic. It ain't the same without you. Good luck.

Vince is truly a class act...and deserves any publicly visible forum he can get. It will be interesting to see when he's interviewed by a 28 reporter for a story.

I think he has the moxy to pull it off, and I am happy he got the position. I would like to see Mr. Sweeney implement a spay-neuter program going so that residents of the area can get their animals fixed at or near cost. To spay or neuter is extremely expensive, and many who love animals cannot afford the cost to keep our critter population down. Such a program is desperately needed here, and I hope it will become a reality. How 'bout it Mr. Sweeney?

"Executively direct food into his mouth"?
What a rude, thoughtless comment. I like Vince, and personally, I think you must be dealing with some inner turmoil that you have mis-directed. Why insult such a nice guy? Is something bugging you that you wish to divulge???

If 22 or 28 approach Vince for an interview, I hope he turns them down. I hope he gives all the interviews to 16. That will be his way of telling Nexstar to stick it.

"Vince said you should spay like this?"

Sorry, it's early and I haven't had my coffee yet.

If you want to hear Vince's Rock 107 interview about his new job and how he felt after being fired... go to rock107.com and find the "podcast" on the front page (which is just an MP3 file you can click on and play and/or download)
