WBRE hires new consumer reporter

Say hello to Jeff Chirico, WBRE's newest consumer reporter. The University of Scranton graduate spent the past few years bouncing around cable news outlets in Lehighton and Reading, and at Bethlehem PBS affiliate WLVT. Somewhere along the way, Chirico also picked up a Murrow award for producing a documentary. He replaces Elliot Weiler, who left WBRE earlier this year for a consumer reporting gig at Fox O&O KTVI in St. Louis.

I worked with Jeff at Blue Ridge Cable when we were both reporters there...He's a good guy who did a great job on air at BRC...I hope he does well at WBRE.

Another cheap hire for Nexstar...another kid with no experience. Godforbid that Nexstar hire someone with experience. Surely you jest.

Good luck to the new reporter. He's gonna need it. It won't be long before people at Channels 50 show him this blog, and he starts defending himself and Nexstar.

For what I have seen, so far he seems to be doing a fine job

Seems nicer enough, smart enough, poised enough, professional enough.

I was a big Elliot Weiler fan; but even Elliot was relatively green when he started out and grew into the job. I'd recommend giving the new guy a fair shot.

I thought he was top notch when he was on BRC so to say he has "no experience" is pushing it.

After tonight's news, I now know what to do if someone hands me a lit candle instead of a candy bar while I stand on their front porch on Halloween night. I should fear for my life, because my costume may catch fire.

Now if someone would just tell me where I might find someone handing out lit candles (or lit propane lighters) instead of candy, then I would know what house to avoid in the first place.

And that dear reader would have been more information than what I got from the new guy tonight.

What next? Don't use frayed wires to string up Christmas decorations? Followed by the summer-time favorite "don't clench a lit firecracker in your fist" story?

New guy, same old stories.

I'm glad to hear that he's doing a good job so far. I wish Jeff the best of luck at WBRE. Working for Nexstar, he's gonna need all the best wishes he can get.

I love it when the 16 Kool-Aid drinkers post here...another cheat hire by Channels 50. The reporters 16 are hiring are just as green...wake up and smell the coffee.

WBRE is lucky to have him. Track down any of the documentaries he produced and you'll see why. He's a good writer/reporter and will excel in the job simply because he's way too smart for that position.

Anyone starting a new job deserves a chance to prove himself/herself. It's not easy when your job is in the public eye so any mistakes are there for all to see and others to take cheap shots at. GIVE HIM A CHANCE! AND GOOD LUCK TO HIM! With the attitudes of so many here, he'll need it.

I wish this guy the best, but we all know he'll get the worst, both here and at 50. Still cannot wait to see that November book, it should be pathetic. Notice how NO ONE seems to even mention that WYOU cluster**** at all now? Itty-Bitty Krispy and his pal/boss/dummy Chris Manson(fitting name, no?)have finally driven the last nail through the heart of that place.

To 8:47 p.m. poster: I'm not a Channel 16 Kool-Aid Drinker. I don't work at WNEP. I never worked at WNEP. I never will work at WNEP. I worked for the Nexstar hellhole on South Franklin Street. I hated Channel 16 when I worked at WBRE. I hated WBRE when I worked at WBRE. That just about sums up my experience in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Have a crappy life on South Franklin.

Again, best of luck to the new consumer reporter at Channel 28. I'm sure he will do a fine job and improve as time goes on.

Yeah...I agree with the 10:03 p,m. poster too. That guy you speak of is like a cancer...you can never get rid of him.

By the way, where IS Phil Yacuboski?

Even someone with as much experience as Katie Couric is not getting rave reviews. Everyone seems to be so opinionated and should maybe direct some of that on to themselves. So far I like what I have seen. This guy at least seems personable.

Leave Yacobuski alone- what harm is he causing you? Leave Jeff alone, too. Don't be so judgemental. You all act like you're in 8th grade when you trash talk others. I swear, children treat others with more respect than you so-called "adults". Grow up. Take a look at yourself! The way you write is like you can do no wrong. More than opinionated --- just mean spirited. If you are so damn good then why weren't you hired to fill Elliot's position? Or for that matter, Phil's. Didn't your mother ever tell you that if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all? I'm so glad my contract is almost up...I'm outta here first chance i get. Move somewhere people are positive and enjoy a healthy competition and friendly banter betweeen affliate employees. Rather than this constant whining, backstabbing...etc.

Thanks for leading by example: that's some positive attitude you've got there. "First chance I get?" What makes you think you're going anywhere? Just ask your buddy Yacobuski how easy good TV jobs are to come by.

And there's the proof that people are pretty much miserable in NEPA.
Buit the deserve what they get if that's the attitude the have.

If the new guy is such a tiger, then why was he stuck lighting costumes on fire?

Why didn't he just ask those around him... "waitaminute, WHEN does THAT ever happen?".

If he REALLY wanted to do a "keep your kids safe" story, then he should have talked about reflective tape, holding hands, carry a flashlight, don't cross the street more than you have to, watch out for the drunk driver coming home from the bar.... something like that.

If this guy is something special when it comes to reporting, then he should work harder to give me something else, something more useful, something more IMPORTANT, when it comes to news stories.

You can despise anyone as much as you want. It's a free country. But you have no right to refer to ANYONE as a "cancer". That crosses a line that shouldn't be crossed by decent human beings. In my opinion, that makes you lower than anyone you want to criticize. Find a dictionary if you don't know detrimental words that are acceptable in human society.

There's the rub. From what I've read here, I'm not sure anyone in local broadcasting rises to the level of "human."
