Catching up

Well, I'm still here, so it looks like I've eluded management and my detractors! Anyway, in case you missed it...

  • Ron Krisulevicz is officially the news director at WBRE and WYOU. Of course, those of you who read Beale's Bites tend to find out about these things long before the newspapers. :)

  • Former WVIA-TV technology guru Mike Burnside is heading into publishing as the managing editor of a publication at Wilkes University. You might remember him as host of "the.net.sho" and as the derby-wearing auctioneer on WVIA's auction fundraisers.

I can't help but laugh, what is going on with WBRE/WYOU?!? Just a few posts ago, everyone was bashing the two like no tomorrow. Today, looking around you can see both posted new job openings, includindg online, as well as WYOU planning for a reformatted show and new set. Honestly, how bad can they be doing?

Did WBRE even conduct a search or interviews for the job??? I know it was posted, but did they bring anyone in for an interview?

Very few people inside WBRE/WYOU know what in hell is going on, at least not the rank and file types. Yep, I remember "the.net.sho." It was PBS, and especially WVIA, at its finest, which is pretty bad. Gawwwwwwd, the concept had so much potential, yet fell so short of it as to be criminal...

To the new news director at WBRE/WYOU Channels 50...good luck buddy. You're gonna need it. I would not want to be in your shoes right now. It's a shame that you have to be subject to the penny pinching antics of Sook the Schnook.

Ouch! For my part, I can't tell whether to laugh or to cry. It's one thing for the bosses to keep serving up the Nexstar Koolaid, it's another for you to drink.

Sorry to mix my metaphors, but head across the street to the Osterhout and ask them to explain "The Emperor's New Clothes" to you. You'll be seeing them soon enough.

Other than a handful of managers, no one in that building drinks the punch, or Koolaid(sic)as you call it. The company isn't doing bad, it's making money, lots of it, it's the very reason for their existence. So long as the cash keeps flowing, all will be right with the Nexstar world, which, of course, does not include 99% of the company's employees.

Why don't we call it "Nexstar Nectar?" One sip and you can no longer read the handwriting on the wall.

Forgive me if I'm skeptical that a new set, a new anchor and a new format will make WYOU competitive.

Of course, I'm also naive. I keep thinking profit isn't the only way to measure success in broadcast journalism.

And I'm one of the few who doesn't think "broadcast journalism" is an oxymoron.

About Nexstar making a profit... this goes to show you the changing face of broadcasting ownership.

There was a time when a company wasn't in it for profit... but to use any gain to advance the company: bonuses, acquisitions and perks. Instead, controllers line their pockets and do nothing for their machine. All they do is pray it continues to pump out.

What handwriting on what wall? Nexstar is making a ton of money here, which means they'll stay. Competitive isn't part of the equation, when are you going to understand that?

And if you think that "broadcast journalism" is an oxymoron, you can't measure it, regardless of what yardstick you use. Quantifying an oxymoron is a fool's errand.

In the FWIW department, the Times Leader jumped the gun on that article, the press release from Wilkes University having been designated as embargoed until Monday (the 19th) at the news conference. Thankfully, the TV folks were there and the deal got quite a bit of attention despite the TL's premature, photo-less blurb and poor choice of words.

Poor choice of words? you may ask... Yes.

"The university also named former WVIA contributor Michael Burnside as the publisher’s managing editor."

You may be assured that Burnside is not a "former" contributor to WVIA, but very much a current one.
