Looking good, sounding good

WNEP anchorman Mike Lewis decided to stop by Williamsport's WKSB-FM this morning to promote his newest CD. For those who don't know, Lewis has a side career as a musician. I've never heard the guy's stuff, but hey, we all need a hobby.

A tipster wrote in to say that Lewis told DJ Gary Chrisman that he has to "shoulder" all the responsibility when Marisa Burke is off. But other tipsters offer conflicting reports, saying Lewis is more like the NEPA equivalent of Ron Burgundy...look good and read straight.

But if I had Lewis' paycheck, hell, I'd read the Teleprompter and sing a song as well!

I'd wager respectable bucks that Gary Chrisman makes nearly as much as Lewis. Gary OWNS radio in Williamsport and WKSB would tank without him. Clear Channel knows that if Chrisman ever went, they could kiss a huge piece of their revenue good-bye. He's been in Williamsport for thirty some years, and to this day has yet to lose his edge. For those who've never heard Gary(and his partner Gail, too), they do one hell of a morning show.

If you took WKSB and plopped it down in the Scr/W-B market, my guess is that it would do very, very well. They have a great staff.

Many media news people are part-time musicians in their spare time. Some are quite good. Our local anchorman is a Harley Davidson riding bassist in his own band. I think they're called "...And This Just In...

When I was Chris Vail, arts critic at the Voice, I had a group called "The Vailed Threat." I played trumpet or piano, as needed. Not very good, but fun. No CD's available, now or then.

Rich Everitt, who anchored at 22 was also a singer/songer writer. In fact he just finished a book that was on the NY times list on tragic plane crashes and musical groups..or something like that....

Lest we forget Amy Kellogg(FNC) who did her time @ NEP in the early '90's? She released her song "Keep the Home fires Burning" dedicated to the troops that were in the 1st Gulf War.

It was Chrys (Peterson) McCabe who did the song at WNEP, not Amy Kellogg. It was a salute to those who served in the military and was part of the station's "Operation Yellow Ribbon" campaign.

Chrys Peterson, as she is now known, is an anchor at WTOL in Toledo, Ohio.

I think the CD is still available on some music websites.

Isn't this the same guy that demanded bigger closets at NEP?

Ron Burgundy: I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
Veronica Corningstone: Really.
Ron Burgundy: People know me.
Veronica Corningstone: Well, I'm very happy for you.
Ron Burgundy: I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I can't keep up with TV anchors and their attempt to re-invent themselves every so often. First I hear Julie Bidwell changes to Banderas, now I cannot follow the links in the chain on Chrys Peterson, who was McCabe, yet married a guy named Tom Runnells. I wonder if McCabe has changed spelling of her first name over the years. Who knows. Who cares. There is something to be said for those who use their real names and just stick to that. It also forces you to keep a solid reputation if you use the same name over the course of your career. Perhaps Frank Andrews (Shimkus) can help us to understand the logic behind all of this cloak and dagger, change your name, change your image, way of thinking.
