Former WARM newsman, DJ dies

Anthony McNulty, better known to NEPA radio listeners as Terry McNulty, died Friday at the age of 70. Some of you may know him best from his nearly 40 years at WARM (back when it was known as "The Mighty 590"), where he was a DJ, news anchorman, and talk show host.

McNulty left WARM in 1998 when the station's new owners, who wanted a "younger" sound, yanked him off-air. He later sued Citadel for age discrimination.

Terry was one of the greatest broadcasters around. A true professional and a very sincere person.

The man was a legend! "The Mighty 590" was not so mighty when Citadel foolishly let him go. I wish I knew him prior to when I broke into the local media. I heard nothing but great things about him!

Great guy, unusual sense of humor, always saw things differently, and I mean that in the best possible way. As very much a great radio personality as he was a newscaster. In fact, Terry's first love was jocking, and many of us now still in the business wanted to be like Terry McNulty, he was pretty much a disc jockey's disc jockey.

He was sharp as a tack, a clever mind in a time when it counted for something in radio. I am sure they are passing the pineapple up there in heaven tonight.

Terry McNulty was one of the last of the NEPA media pioneers. His resume reads like a history of broadcasting in our area. He started as a record librarian at a radio station and went on to become one of the most respected and loved radio personalities for over two decades. I hope he understood how much he meant to his many listeners.

I never knew him, but I listened to him for years on WARM. When I was a kid, I wanted to be on the pineapple feature -- until I realized it was a creation of Terry's mind. He always seemed to love what he was doing when he was on the air. I'd love to hear some "old timers'" stories about Terry and the heyday of WARM.

I worked with Terry at WARM and have great memories of him. At the time he was doing news and I consider him one of the best broadcasters in NEPA. He had an off beat sense of humor, and was a true professional. Rest in Peace Terry, we'll pass the pineapple for you fro one final time.
