Wikipedia picture whacked

After yours truly pointed out that WNEP misattributed a Citizens' Voice picture of murdered gay pornographer Bryan Kocis in a story, the folks on Montage Mountain Road have suddenly dug up what appears to be a mugshot of him.

Gone is the original picture that was taken from, and attributed to, Wikipedia. Well, not totally, but I'm sure those pictures will be yanked offline as well.

It's not so much how WNEP sourced the picture, since some people have noted that the CV doesn't even say who took the picture, but it's the fact that WNEP relied on a sometimes-unreliable Internet encyclopedia for a crucial piece of a story. Someone in that newsroom got lazy.

As a watcher of local news not employed by any media, I think some of you are blowing this out of proportion. They identified the source where they got it. As far as the public goes, that's enough. They gave credit, so they didn't plagarize. I guess you insdiers have different standards and should state your opinions as you see it. But as a news watcher for decades, I can state that the public they serve was satisfied that their source - whatever it may be - was properly identified. Fight over something more meaningful. You all work to serve the public. The public isn't upset over this issue.

Public isn't upset cuz it's WNEP. They could run al-Jazeera material and anyone who bitched would be told to "change the channel"

So WBRE does the legwork, and WNEP reaps the benefits by misidentifying the original source.

Where I come from that's called "stealing," and I'm sorry it doesn't bother you. That tells me more about YOU than I think I want to know.

I still think there would be a problem if the source was unidentified. By listing "wikipedia" everyone knows there is another ultimate source. But if THEY got it from "wikipedia" they are honestly identifying where THEY got it. If WBRE is the source and THEY supplied it to WNEP, then THEY should get the credit. I'd say the same if WNEP was the source and WBRE got it from "wikipedia". Obviously there's something here I don't see, not being an insider. Point being, all news stations serve the public and sometimes should share in order to serve. I'd say by stating the source they used, they didn't "steal". This from a non-media person who likes to watch the news.

Maybe I can clarify this a little better. I am aware that stations look for exclusive coverage and no other station should try to steal it. But by getting it from wikipedia and identifying that as their source, they are in fact admitting it came from somewhere else. See what I mean? Look. If I buy a name-brand product from a place like Big Lots, I say I bought it from Big Lots. Maybe Big Lots got it from Sears of Penneys or somewhere else. I know that Big Lots didn't originate the product, but I give Big Lots the credit. As a member of the viewing public, I look at "wikipedia" as a version of Big Lots. Get it? I don't pretend to know the standards you folks live by, but all of us go to places like Big Lots now and then. I'm just saying the public doesn't mind if you guys do, too. Maybe I'm not saying it right. I don't condone stealing. But I don't see this as stealing. Just my opinion.

Well...it's called "ethics". Obviusoly, WNEP has none and the lowly WBRE which gets shat on by everyone does.
We serve the public ETHICALLY!!!! It's sad, but telling, that the NEPA public is OK with a breach of ethical standards. It's not surprising, though. People in NEPA are lowlifes to begin with.

Now HOLD IT!!! Just WHO is a LOWLIFE??? Read the statements again. No I DON'T know your job standards and SAID so. No, I DON'T condone stealing. I just said this didn't seem to be stealing. NOT UNDERSTANDING what your jobs consist of does NOT make me a LOWLIFE. Maybe you'd be a bonehead at MY professional job because YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IT. The big difference here is that I would excuse you for not knowing my resposibilities and perhaps would try to educate you if you were interested. YOU apparently blow off people by calling them lowlifes and feel superior by doing so because they don't know what you have in your so-called brain. Well guess what? To succeed at your business you'd better LEARN to GET ALONG WITH PEOPLE. If you can't do that, you are either a hypocrit smiling at people you look down upon, or you STINK at your job. KNOCK IT OFF! If I'm WRONG, I'm WRONG. But I am NOT a lowlife, I am an honest person who had the nerve to express my OPINION. Well, EXCUSE ME!!! I'd really LOVE to have you comment about something YOU don't know! You know what I'd do? I'd tell you you were wrong, I'd explain why, and I'd help you understand the difference of opinion. Because I'd respect you as a HUMAN BEING. Maybe I give you too much credit.

So, let's guess your profile; single, male, working at WBRE, and in full denial that your employer is most deserving of being "shat" upon. You're also upset that no one at the supermarket goes into instant recognition mode when you stroll through produce, because teevee is supposed to make you a star. It only makes you a star if people see you, meaning that they watch you. They don't watch. WBRE gets maybe 4 out of every 100 available viewers. My advice? Try another supermarket, maybe you'll get lucky.

Last attempt at an explanation. Let's say I work for Gateway Ford. I sell a car to Joe Smith. In the middle of the night my sticker is peeled off the back bumper and a Gibbons Ford sticker is pasted on.

Gibbons is passing itself off as the dealer who sold Joe the car. Illegal? Probably less so than WNEP misrepresenting WBRE's copyrighted work.

Unethical? I think so.

5:21 pm hit it right.

It's WBRE's copyrighted work, not wikipedia's or the CV.

I think this indicates the level of laziness at WNEP. If I were the ND up there, I'd knock some heads around over this sort of bullshit. This really blurs credibility.

WELL, WNEP LOST THEIR "NEWS DIRECTOR." WE AT WNEP FONDLY CALLED HIM THE HATCHET MAN FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES. I WONDER IF THE RANK AND FILE IN HARRISBURG IS AWARE THAT THE ONLY THINGS HE CAN DO IN A NEWSROOM ARE 1. RATTLE EVERYONES CAGES AND 2.PLAY GOLF ON THE COMPUTER? DUCK WHEN DENNIS SAYS "CAN I SEE YOU FOR A MINUTE IN MY OFFICE." THAT USUALLY MEANS HE SPENT SOME TIME WITH ONE OF HIS "SNITCHES" AND THEY RATTED YOU OUT FOR SOMETHING THEY DID WRONG. PASS THE BUCK WORKS WELL FOR DENNIS FISHER. "THE BUCK STOPS HERE" DOESN'T. START SENDING OUT AIR CHECKS IF YOU BECOME A REGULAR IN MR. FISHERS OFFICE. IF YOU ALREADY KNOW THE RATS IN THE NEWSROOM, WATCH THE PARADE IN AND OUT OF FISHERS OFFICE.
