Sid Michaels back at WYOU

Imagine my surprise when I saw Sid Michaels on WYOU Sunday night. The anchorman who left the station last summer when "Dialing for News" eliminated weekday sportscasts, is back as a fill-in anchor. Either that state PR job isn't paying well, or he couldn't get the sports out of his system.

I'm not the only one who's scratching his head. Several of you e-mailed me in shock as well, with one of you comparing Michaels' return to that of a woman who goes back to her abusive husband. I wouldn't go that far, but then again, this is a guy who saw the writing on the wall after WBRE axed sports anchorman Jacon Knapp.

Sid's presence in a newsroom would always be a welcome sight. He's knowledgable, hard working, old school but never boring. You watch him sometimes just to hear his off-the-cuff remarks.
But, W.T.F!!! How many times can someone take a bite outta the shit sandwhich that is Nexstar? Give that guy a saliva test.
For the love of all that's holy, Sid, don't quit the day job. Please!

Heck, I thought Sid had filed for a "Protection From Nexstar" order!

Sid's a fairly well-liked guy. Despite that, he needs a lesson in dignity and self-respect; going back again and again to that house of pain makes him look really bad.

Way to keep up on things, Howie. Sid anchored for WYOU a few weeks ago and also did their telethon.

I wasn't here for three months, remember?

Sid Michaels back at WYOU,
could this possibly mean the return of Vince Sweeney to WBRE??

TV broken for 3 months Howie? You don't need a blog to keep up on things.

Who has a perfect job? If everybody who worked for employers who don't give two cents for their employees decided not to work, about one-tenth of one percent of current employees in this country would still be on the job. Lots of us put up with a ton of crap on a regular basis because we need a paycheck with a living wage. It's reality, not lack of self-esteem. Sid is good at the job. If the job isn't good in return, at least he can go home and know he earned his pay and did his best. That's all any of us can expect in a world where the job market has zero loyalty to dedicated employees. Even if the employer stinks, the work is honorable. Enough said. Good luck, Sid.

Don't worry, the Senate Democratic Broadcast Services job is going just fine, and I'm not about to give it up!!! It doesn't hurt to get some face-time once in awhile, and I told Mike Conigs that I'd help out as a fill in when he couldn't make it.
As for the NASCAR coverage two weeks ago, that was always my favorite sport to cover, so it gave me a chance to get to the track and renew acquaintances with some of the people that only come this way twice a summer.

Concerning the telethon...I always liked Dr. Ryan, Carol Tevis and everyone at Geisinger, and with three kids of my own, I know just how important that hospital is for so many people, so I had absolutely no problem lending a hand in trying to raise money for that cause.

As for working for Nexstar: While many....sorry....most people have their opinion of the company and everything that goes with it, I never had a problem with anyone there, whether it be ownership, management, co-workers, etc. While I may not have agreed with everything that was done there, again, I knew what I was going to when I returned in 2003, so nothing that happened really took me by surprise.

While I greatly enjoy my new job working with Senator Mellow and the rest PA Democratic Senate, and wouldn't think of leaving, I do still like to fill in for Mike once in awhile and at least stay sharp in front of the camera.

As for dignity and respect, I don't think that's even an issue.
Hell, I'm not throwing papers or screaming or acting like a goof in front of the camera....I'm reporting sports for a couple of hours!!!

Remember, whatever happens behind-the-scenes at the station is only seen by the employees, and there are people who still do watch WYOU and WBRE.

And last but not least...It's about time you got back, Howie!!!

See, same sad poster inserting Vince's name in EVERY thread. I'd be tempted to say it's Vince, but he's too classy a guy and he's moved on. Maybe you should too.

Two questions.

Sid, is that really you?

And Sid, did you get that state job through the Frank Shimkus employment agency?

I believe they could kiss Vince Sweeney's derriere in the proverbial "Globe Store window" to come back and double his salary (okay maybe not double his salary) and he'd tell 'em to go pound sand.

I guess, like most people. Howard wouldn't be caught dead watching WYOU if he didn't have to.

Hey! Julie Sidoni married Scott Schaffer...knowing what she knows. Sometimes people do things that don't make sense to others. Even when they know they deserve better!

I always thought Sid and Mike Conigliaro did a great job, it's was good to see Sid back on the air. Can someone tell me why Mike is still at WYOU??? He's better then they are. To good for the market. Jump ship Mikey!

"Can someone tell me why Mike is still at WYOU???

Sure. He's incredibly lazy, complacent and self-satisfied. His head won't fit through the door of any decent station.

I'm disappointed no one has anything to say about the Sidoni/Schaeffer union. I would think you guys would have opinion of that!!

I have worked with Mike Conigliaro for the past few years. He is not complacent or self-satisfied. Matter of fact, he may be one of the best on-air talent in the market. He has been put in a bad situation here at WYOU. As for lazy, your saying that about a guy who runs his own business when not doing TV. Most likley making more money part-time then we do full-time! Just my thought. He's having the last laugh.

I will give you that, Mike is pretty solid on-air. Butlook at his competition, not much! He does seem a bit arogent at times. All in all, the comment at 9:24 am bit unfair.

First of all, lazy, complacent, self-satisfied? Maybe you should be concerned about your own welfare. Nothing but a cheap shot. He has done everything conceivable to keep the sports department afloat for WYOU. Yes, there are some days that are more difficult than others to fill shows. Mike works hard and goes out of his way to produce. Keep up the good work!

3:07PM, thanks for setting me straight. I thought the reason Mike produces ho-hum sportscasts was that he just didn't give a damn.

Turns out he's got another job that (obviously) takes the bulk of his time and attention. THAT'S why his shows look like they were done by a parttime high school kid.

Another dedicated Nexstar employee.

Yeah, but he's working for Nexstar. Who's laughing now?
