Mini Bites

  • How far will WBRE go for a story? How about Binghamton, New York. I understand this is just another angle on the Scranton smoking ban, as New York already bans smoking in public places, but it seems like a wasted trip. Oh, and the audio on that story is bad.

  • It looks like there's not enough room in Bradford County for two NBC affiliates. Comcast, which provides cable service to Towanda, is booting the NBC affiliate in nearby Elmira, New York, since Towanda viewers already get WBRE. What's more noteworty is that the article points out WETM is beating WBRE in their own market...at least when it comes to the 6 p.m. newscast.

  • Did you find a misspelled word on WNEP's website recently? Don't point it out on Talkback 16, as most posters there have no problem with a news organization misspelling words in its stories. These are probably also the same people who shrugged off WNEP's use of a video news release last year.

When I was at WBRE, I had to cover a story in Bradford County (severe weather story). Firefighters in the area were surprised that WBRE made the trip up there, and they told me they watch the Elmira stations. Evidently, WETM and WENY cover stories in that area of Pennsylvania much more often than the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton stations. Another stupid move by Crapcast, for taking the most-watched station in Elmira off cable in Bradford County.

If a Scranton/W-B station has to go to Binghamton for a story: they're f@#ked.

Really. Binghaton: one step above hell.

I'm watching the WBRE TV I Team and they are talking about internet porn. They interviewed Atty. Carrrie Dellasndro who talked about how she hears a lot of info for clients about porn. Wasn't she the same Attorney that Amy Bradley interviewed a few weeks ago because of problem properties in South Wilkes Barre? And wasn't she the landlord of those problem properties who said she did background checks we've never ever seen? Does the I Team communicate, is Sherry Dellasandro the designed I Team "go to" attorney? I posted this on another blog because the guy is in love with the I Team. I ain't! They are either too stupid or too lazy. A combinarion of both would be just too much hard work!

Typos and misspellings happen in this business, but it amazes me that some people make such little effort to be correct.

Did anyone notice WNEP anchors take credit on Thursday's 6pm news for finding the "person of interest" in the Kocis case? Way to go WNEP. The Times-Leader did the work. You used the newspaper's information and acted as though you broke the story. Another stretch of ethics.

I loved the "we're at war" comment on the Talkback piece.(And yes, I did correct the spelling)

Why is it that, because we find ourselves mired in a conflict abroad, some people feel it's necessary to suspend all God-given (and man-made) rights and privileges? From civility and intelligence, to civil rights and habeas corpus, it's all on hold until "mission accomplished."

No time for spell check? That's funny!

Comcast had to dump WETM in Bradford County. Nexstar likely insisted on it. Bradford County is still the NEPA market. Nexstar has the rights to NBC programming in its own market. Comcast probably had the option of blocking out NBC programming and keeping local content from WETM, but why go through all that trouble? It can stick something on that channel that makes money.

Did you also notice that Andy Mehalshick always uses the same police officer for all his I Team reports... catching a predator, finding teens through myspace, etc.. Butler Twp. PD sure is getting a lot of air time!

Bradford County folks can still get WETM in the future, by simply grabing the rabbit ears. If they're not lying around, you can get a good deal for under $15 at Walmart.

How much you want to bet it wasn't crapcast, but nexstar forcing their FCC rights to fight dual network broadcasting on cable outlets in an area they can't afford the gas to drive up and cover.

They can afford the gas to go up to Bradford County and cover stories. They are just too lazy to drive up there more than once every three or four months, if that.

Heard the often criticized news director at WNEP just resigned. Anyone have details?

Let's not be hypocrites (or maybe it's too late).

Don't roast WBRE for going to Binghamton for a story when WNEP went to Lancaster just to show off.

Dennis Fisher left WNEP? When? What's the deal?

I don't watch WBRE, but after all the criticism here, I find it hypocritical to now criticize them for pursuing a story they felt worthy to broadcast. How do you expect them to improve if they don't make the effort out of their own backyard? Sounds like a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. They apparently have their backs against the wall, so let them do their jobs as they see fit to try to get out of the hole. Don't step on them when they try to climb out! I don't hear anyone say they are watching this channel. If they are to survive, at least don't crush their efforts on improvement and expanding their viewing area. Good luck, WBRE. You need it, especially with critics like you have here.

Nexstar ruined WBRE and WYOU. It's not the immediate staff of the two stations faults the stations suck. Blame Sook the Schnook.

I work there now and you're schtick is outrageously funny. Seems you're still victimized by Perry. How about some counseling? How about some alcohol to drown away those abusive years?

Those of us who work there put up with the negative aura. Maybe it's not the best pay in the world, but it's a living. Why not try and move on?
